SAN DIEGO — Some performances change the course of a match. Others announce a player.

On Wednesday night at Snapdragon Stadium, Niko Tsakiris delivered both.

The San Jose Earthquakes walked away with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over San Diego FC, but the scoreline only tells part of the story. The night belonged to Tsakiris, who produced a goal and two assists before halftime and played a direct role in all three of San Jose’s goals.

It was a performance built on confidence, creativity and, perhaps most importantly, resilience.

A statement from the opening whistle

Just three minutes into the match, Tsakiris received a long ball from Beau Leroux, raced beyond the San Diego defense and cut inside before curling a left-footed shot past goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos.

One-nil.

San Jose had its early breakthrough, and Tsakiris had announced himself.

But his influence was about to become even greater.

In the eighth minute, Dos Santos denied Tsakiris from the penalty spot. For most players, missing an early penalty can linger.

For Tsakiris, it lasted only minutes.

In the 12th minute, he responded by delivering a perfectly weighted ball into the box for Preston Judd, who finished to give the Earthquakes a 2–0 lead. Judd’s goal was his team-leading 12th of the season.

Then came the third.

In the 35th minute, Tsakiris again found the final pass, sending a beautiful ball toward Ousseni Bouda, who headed home from just inside the edge of the box.

Three goals.

Three Tsakiris fingerprints.

By halftime, the midfielder had a goal and two assists.

More than the numbers

The statistics were impressive, but they don’t fully capture his performance.

Tsakiris constantly gave San Jose another attacking outlet, finding space between the lines and making decisive plays when the game opened up.

His response after the missed penalty may have been the clearest indication of his maturity.

Instead of disappearing from the match, he became even more influential.

That mentality helped San Jose establish a 3–0 lead before San Diego eventually found a way back into the game.

And the Earthquakes would need every bit of that early cushion.

Holding on in San Diego

Anders Dreyer pulled one back for San Diego shortly before halftime.

The hosts continued to push in the second half, and the match became increasingly tense.

San Diego goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos was sent off in the 81st minute, but the numerical advantage did not make the final minutes easy for San Jose.

In stoppage time, Cédric Bakambu converted a penalty to make it 3–2.

Suddenly, a match that had looked comfortably in San Jose’s hands was hanging by a thread.

The Earthquakes held on.

The final whistle delivered their first victory since the FIFA World Cup break and ended an eight-match winless run. The result moved San Jose to fifth place in the Western Conference at 11–8–5, with 38 points.

A night to remember for Tsakiris

For San Jose, the three points were crucial.

For Niko Tsakiris, the performance was something more.

A goal. Two assists. Four key passes.

And involvement in every Earthquakes goal.

It was the kind of performance that doesn’t simply appear on a scoresheet. It changes the feel of a match.

Tsakiris missed a penalty, responded with an assist, created another goal, and helped put San Jose in control before the game turned into a late fight for survival.

The Earthquakes came to San Diego looking to end a difficult stretch.

They left with three points.

And Tsakiris left his mark on the rivalry.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver closed out the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season as a five-time champion, adding another title to a remarkable run that has now produced four consecutive championships and five titles in six years.

Palou secured the championship before the season finale, but the final stop at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca provided the perfect stage for the celebration

A Season of Consistency

Palou’s 2026 campaign was defined not only by victories, but by consistency.

He finished the season with six wins, eight poles, 12 top-five finishes and 15 top-10s, leading 673 laps across 18 races. He ultimately finished 86 points clear of Kyle Kirkwood in the championship standings.

Those numbers tell only part of the story.

Palou has now joined an elite group of drivers with five or more IndyCar championships. Only A.J. Foyt, with seven, and Scott Dixon, with six, have more.

He is also the second driver in series history to win four consecutive championships, matching the achievement of Sébastien Bourdais from 2004 through 2007.

Laguna Seca

The season ended at one of Palou’s favorite circuits: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course has become closely associated with Palou’s recent dominance. He entered the 2026 finale having won the previous two races there and three of the previous four. (IndyCar (https://www.indycar.com/news/2026/08/08-30-palou-clincher-feature?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

This time, however, it was Scott McLaughlin who took the checkered flag.

Palou finished eighth, but the result mattered little to the championship story. The title had already been secured, and the weekend became a celebration of another extraordinary season.

Five Titles. And Counting.

Palou’s rise has been remarkably fast.

His five championships came in 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, making him the youngest five-time champion in INDYCAR SERIES history.

At Laguna Seca, the championship celebration felt less like the conclusion of a story and more like another chapter in one still being written.

For a driver who has already climbed to third on the all-time championship list, the question is no longer whether Palou belongs among IndyCar’s greats.

It’s how much further he can climb.

The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season began on the streets of St. Petersburg and ended beneath the hills of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Between those two bookends came an Indianapolis 500 decided by 0.0233 seconds, breakthrough victories, championship challenges, veterans fighting back, young drivers establishing themselves and a late-season surge from Scott McLaughlin.

At the center of it all was Alex Palou.

But the 2026 season was much bigger than one driver.

It was a season defined by a group of drivers who repeatedly separated themselves from the field — Palou, Kyle Kirkwood, Christian Lundgaard, Pato O’Ward, David Malukas, Josef Newgarden, Marcus Ericsson, Felix Rosenqvist and Scott McLaughlin among them.

And when the final checkered flag fell at Laguna Seca, Palou had the championship.

The others had their own stories to tell.

Alex Palou: The standard everyone was chasing

There was no question who stood at the top when the season ended.

Alex Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing produced another extraordinary championship campaign.

Palou won six races, eight poles, 12 top-five finishes and 15 top-10s, led 673 laps and finished the season with 631 points.

His championship margin was 86 points over Kyle Kirkwood.

More importantly, it was Palou’s fifth INDYCAR SERIES championship and fourth consecutive title, putting him alongside Sébastien Bourdais as the only drivers in series history to win four championships in a row.

Only A.J. Foyt and Scott Dixon have more championships overall.

Palou did not need to win the finale.

The championship had already been secured.

But his presence throughout the season had already established the benchmark everyone else was trying to reach.

From St. Petersburg to Barber, Long Beach, Detroit, Nashville and Portland, Palou repeatedly showed the combination that has become his trademark: speed without unnecessary mistakes and an ability to extract maximum points from almost every weekend.

By the time the championship arrived in Monterey, the question was no longer whether Palou could win the title.

It was whether anyone could stop him from building one of the greatest modern INDYCAR résumés.

Kyle Kirkwood: The closest challenger

If Palou was the class of the field, Kyle Kirkwood was the driver who came closest to disrupting his reign.

Kirkwood finished second in the championship with 545 points, collecting two victories, one pole, 10 top-five finishes and 15 top-10s.

He also won the inaugural race on the streets of Washington, D.C., adding another major victory to a season that established him as Andretti Global’s leading championship threat.

Kirkwood’s progression was one of the defining stories of the season.

INDYCAR had already identified him as a rising star, but 2026 was the year he began looking like a legitimate championship contender.

His greatest strength remained street courses, where he had already built a reputation as one of the series’ strongest performers.

But the biggest question was whether he could match Palou’s consistency across the entire calendar.

He came close.

Not close enough for the championship — but close enough to make it clear that the future of INDYCAR could include a serious Palou-Kirkwood rivalry.

Christian Lundgaard: The breakthrough at Arrow McLaren

Christian Lundgaard entered 2026 with something to prove.

By the end of the season, he had done it.

The Danish driver finished third in the championship with 535 points, his best career championship result.

He won twice, took one pole, collected eight top-five finishes and finished inside the top 10 in 14 of the 18 races.

His season was particularly impressive because of its consistency.

Lundgaard became one of the most reliable drivers in the field during the second half of the year, finishing sixth at Laguna Seca to close the season with his sixth consecutive top-10 finish.

He also finished in the top 10 in 10 of the final 11 races.

At Arrow McLaren, the balance of power also began to shift.

Pato O’Ward remained one of the fastest and most recognizable drivers in the series.

But Lundgaard increasingly looked like the team’s most consistent championship performer.

Pato O’Ward: Speed, victories and another Indy 500 near-miss

Pato O’Ward finished fourth in the championship, but his season was far from ordinary.

He scored three victories, more than any driver other than Palou, and finished with 522 points.

And then there was Indianapolis.

O’Ward produced one of the strongest runs of his career at the 110th Indianapolis 500, finishing fourth after executing an aggressive fuel strategy in a backup car.

The race itself became one of the defining moments of the season.

Felix Rosenqvist won after making a last-lap pass on David Malukas, with O’Ward just behind the fight for victory.

O’Ward’s fourth-place finish was another reminder that the Mexican driver remains one of INDYCAR’s most dangerous competitors on any given weekend.

His three wins also made Arrow McLaren one of the season’s strongest organizations.

David Malukas: The driver who came painfully close

David Malukas’ 2026 season could be described in one word:

frustrating.

Not because he was slow.

Because he was so close.

Malukas finished fifth in the championship with 514 points, nine top-five finishes and 13 top-10s.

But he never reached victory lane.

His biggest opportunity came at Indianapolis.

Starting near the front and fighting for the win, Malukas came within inches of winning the world’s most famous race.

Instead, he finished second.

For the second consecutive year, he had to watch someone else celebrate the Indianapolis 500 victory.

Yet his consistency throughout the season made him one of the strongest drivers in the field.

At Team Penske, Malukas emerged as one of the organization’s most dependable performers.

The victory never came.

But the speed was unmistakable.

Josef Newgarden: The oval specialist

Josef Newgarden’s 2026 season was another reminder that INDYCAR requires completely different skills depending on the circuit.

The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner remained one of the strongest oval racers in the championship.

He won twice and finished sixth in the final standings with 423 points.

Newgarden’s strength on ovals was particularly notable.

Since the beginning of the 2021 season, he had won 13 of 30 oval races entering the second half of 2026 — an extraordinary strike rate that separated him from the rest of the field.

While Palou became the benchmark on road and street courses, Newgarden continued to represent something different:

Pure oval excellence.

Marcus Ericsson: A strong second half

Marcus Ericsson quietly put together one of the more impressive seasons in the field.

The Swedish driver won at Markham, helping Andretti Global claim victory in the inaugural Canadian INDYCAR event.

He finished seventh in the championship with 429 points.

But his strongest stretch came late in the year.

Ericsson finished the season with seven consecutive top-10 finishes, demonstrating remarkable consistency during the final third of the championship.

His season was less spectacular than Palou’s or O’Ward’s.

But it was one of the most complete campaigns in the field.

Felix Rosenqvist: The man who owned Indianapolis

Some drivers define a season with a championship.

Others define it with one race.

For Felix Rosenqvist, that race was Indianapolis.

Rosenqvist delivered one of the greatest finishes in Indianapolis 500 history, passing David Malukas on the final lap to win by just 0.0233 seconds.

The margin was the closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history.

The victory also made Rosenqvist only the third Swedish driver to win the race.

He finished ninth in the championship, but his Indianapolis victory will arguably remain his defining image from 2026.

Scott McLaughlin: The season-ending surge

Scott McLaughlin saved one of his best stretches for last.

The Team Penske driver entered the final races outside the championship’s top five, but a late-season surge changed the picture.

Then came Laguna Seca.

McLaughlin qualified on pole and controlled the season finale, leading 87 of the race’s 95 laps.

He won the Mission Foods Grand Prix of Monterey — ending a 36-race winless streak — while Kyle Kirkwood finished second.

It was an appropriate final chapter for a driver who had spent much of the year searching for that breakthrough.

The championship belonged to Palou.

The final race belonged to McLaughlin.

Will Power, Scott Dixon and the veterans

The 2026 season also showed how difficult it is for even established champions to remain at the very top of INDYCAR.

Will Power finished 10th in the championship.

Scott Dixon, one of the most successful drivers in INDYCAR history, finished 12th.

Neither driver disappeared from the competitive picture.

But the younger generation increasingly occupied the front of the standings.

Kirkwood.

Lundgaard.

Malukas.

Palou.

The changing of the guard that INDYCAR identified early in the season became one of its defining themes.

The rest of the field

Behind the headline names, the season featured a wide range of performances.

Rinus VeeKay finished 10th.

Kyffin Simpson was 13th.

Graham Rahal finished 14th.

Marcus Armstrong was 15th.

Alexander Rossi finished 16th.

Santino Ferrucci was 17th.

Romain Grosjean finished 18th.

Nolan Siegel was 19th.

Louis Foster finished 20th.

Dennis Hauger finished 21st and was named 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Rookie of the Year.

Christian Rasmussen finished 22nd, tied with Caio Collet on points.

Mick Schumacher finished 24th, followed by Sting Ray Robb.

Conor Daly made one championship start.

Every driver contributed a different chapter to the season, whether through victories, qualifying performances, championship points, dramatic recoveries or simply the challenge of surviving 18 races at some of the most demanding circuits in North America.

The races that defined 2026

The championship was shaped by 18 races across the United States and Canada.

St. Petersburg — Alex Palou
Palou opened the championship with a victory.

Phoenix — Josef Newgarden
The oval specialist reminded everyone why Team Penske remains a force on short ovals.

The Corkscrew.

The hills.

The sound of INDYCAR engines echoing through the valley.

The final race of 2026 produced a fitting contrast.

McLaughlin was fighting for a victory.

Kirkwood was fighting for second.

The rest of the field was fighting for the final positions of the season.

Palou was simply celebrating a championship that had already been secured.

The Spaniard started on the front row but finished eighth after his team went off strategy with no championship points left to chase.

The result hardly mattered.

The trophy was already his.

A season with a changing face

The 2026 season offered a glimpse into where INDYCAR may be heading.

Palou remains the benchmark.

But behind him, a new generation is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Kirkwood finished second.

Lundgaard finished third.

O’Ward remained one of the series’ most dangerous winners.

Malukas continued to show front-running pace.

And drivers such as McLaughlin, Ericsson and Rosenqvist delivered some of the season’s most memorable victories.

At the same time, Newgarden, Dixon and Power demonstrated that experience still matters — particularly when the championship turns toward specific disciplines such as oval racing.

That combination made 2026 compelling.

The established stars were still there.

The next generation was catching them.

And at the very front was a driver who seemed to have mastered nearly everything the series could put in front of him.

Five championships. Eighteen races. One champion.

When the season began in St. Petersburg, the question was whether anyone could challenge Alex Palou.

By the time the series reached Laguna Seca, the question had changed.

How long can this run continue?

Palou finished the year with six wins, eight poles, 15 top-10 finishes and another championship.

Kirkwood finished second.

Lundgaard third.

O’Ward fourth.

Malukas fifth.

And behind them was a field filled with drivers who each left their own mark on the 2026 season.

Then McLaughlin took the final checkered flag.

The engines went quiet.

The paddock began packing for the offseason.

And the Astor Challenge Cup went home with the same driver who had spent the entire season setting the standard.

Alex Palou had done it again.

But the story of the 2026 INDYCAR SERIES was never only about one driver.

It was about a field that kept pushing him.

A championship that produced surprises at every type of circuit.

An Indianapolis 500 decided by inches.

And a final weekend at Laguna Seca that provided the perfect backdrop for the end of another extraordinary season.

SAN JOSE — Before the San Jose Earthquakes and St. Louis CITY SC kicked off at PayPal Park, the stadium had a familiar Bay Area voice calling for attention.

Only this time, it wasn’t coming from the pitch.

It was coming from the NBA.

Golden State Warriors guard De’Anthony Melton stepped into the spotlight before kickoff, taking his turn on the Earthquakes’ famous siren and sending the crowd into game-day mode.

For a moment, the basketball court and soccer pitch felt like the same Bay Area stage.

From Dub Nation to Quakes Nation

Melton’s appearance brought together two of the region’s professional sports worlds.

A member of the Golden State Warriors, Melton has become part of the Bay Area sports landscape. On this night, he traded the hardwood for the pitch and the Warriors’ blue and gold for the Earthquakes’ blue and black.

Then came the siren.

Melton grabbed the controls and sounded the horn as the crowd inside PayPal Park responded.

It was a simple moment, but one that captured something bigger: the connection between Bay Area teams and the fans who follow them across sports.

More than a guest appearance

Melton’s night didn’t stop with the siren.

He also exchanged jerseys with Earthquakes and U.S. men’s national team defender DeJuan Jones, creating another connection between the Bay Area’s basketball and soccer communities.

For a few minutes before the match, the focus wasn’t on standings, points or statistics.

It was about the energy of the stadium.

And Melton knew exactly how to bring it.

A memorable moment before kickoff

The match itself would eventually belong to St. Louis, who defeated San Jose 3–1 after taking control early.

But before the result was decided, Melton had already provided one of the night’s most recognizable images.

Standing inside PayPal Park with the siren in his hands, a Warriors star became part of the Quakes’ matchday ritual.

For a photographer, it was the kind of moment that exists outside the normal rhythm of a soccer match—a crossover of personalities, teams and Bay Area sports culture.

The siren sounded.

The crowd answered.

And for one moment, Dub Nation met Quakes Nation.

OAKLAND — Under the lights of the Oakland Coliseum, the Oakland Roots and Orange County SC played to a 1–1 draw on August 29, but for Oakland, the night was as much about defending a result as it was about creating one.

At the center of that battle was David Garcia.

Starting in the heart of the Roots defense, Garcia helped anchor an Oakland back line that faced increasing pressure as the match progressed. The Roots opened the night aggressively, pushing forward and forcing Orange County to defend deep during the opening stages.

But soccer matches are rarely decided in the opening minutes.

They are decided by what happens when the momentum changes.

Garcia at the heart of the defense

Oakland came into the match looking to build on a 1–0 road victory over San Antonio FC and keep its playoff hopes alive.

The Roots started with intent.

Three corners inside the opening 12 minutes reflected Oakland’s aggressive approach, and Florian Valot eventually broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a long-range effort that gave the Roots a 1–0 lead.

Behind that attacking start, Garcia and the Oakland defense had to remain organized.

Orange County entered the match sitting third in the Western Conference and had plenty of attacking quality. Oakland knew that protecting the lead would require concentration from the back line for the full 90 minutes.

Garcia was part of that effort from the opening whistle.

When the game turned

The second half brought a different match.

Orange County pushed higher and began putting Oakland’s defense under sustained pressure. The equalizer finally arrived in the 60th minute, when Yaniv Bazini finished after Kendall McIntosh made an initial save from a corner sequence.

At 1–1, the match became a test of Oakland’s ability to withstand pressure while still looking for another opportunity.

For Garcia, that meant doing the less glamorous work defenders are often judged by: positioning, recovery, organization and staying switched on when every possession begins to matter.

There was no second goal.

There was no late collapse.

And there was no winner.

One point, but a bigger picture

The final whistle confirmed a 1–1 draw — only the second draw in the 17-match history between the two clubs. Oakland finished with 14 shots and 13 corners, while Orange County recorded 13 shots and five on target.

For Oakland, the result extended its unbeaten run to three matches, but it also left the feeling that more was available.

The Roots had taken the lead.

They had controlled significant stretches of the match.

And they had chances to finish it.

Head coach Ryan Martin later acknowledged that Oakland had created enough opportunities to win and needed to find a way to put matches away.

That is where performances like Garcia’s become important.

The defender’s job

Goals will always dominate the headlines.

But nights like this are also defined by the players whose work happens away from the spotlight.

Garcia’s presence at the back represented the other side of Oakland’s performance — the discipline required to stay organized when a one-goal advantage disappears and the opponent begins searching for the winner.

At the Coliseum, Oakland did not get all three points.

But it got one.

And with the playoff race entering its final stretch, every point matters.

For Garcia and the Roots, the next challenge is turning these competitive performances into complete 90-minute victories.

The Coliseum will have another chapter to offer.

And David Garcia will be one of the players at the center of it.

There are photographs that become more interesting with time.

When I photographed Eduard Löwen at PayPal Park during St. Louis CITY SC’s visit to San Jose, I was simply photographing another MLS match.

Löwen was wearing St. Louis red.

A few days later, that same player was officially a San Jose Earthquake.

Suddenly, the photographs meant something completely different.

One Match. One Player. A Completely Different Future.

St. Louis CITY SC came to PayPal Park in August with Löwen in the middle of its lineup.

At the time, there was nothing obvious in the frame to suggest that his relationship with St. Louis was about to end.

Löwen had been one of the defining players in the club’s short history. He joined St. Louis ahead of its inaugural MLS season and played a major role in the club’s historic 2023 campaign, recording six goals and a team-leading 17 assists as St. Louis finished first in the Western Conference.

By the time I made these photographs at PayPal Park, Löwen had already established himself as one of MLS’s most productive midfielders.

I just didn’t know I was photographing him for the last time in a St. Louis shirt.

Then Came the Transfer

On August 26, the San Jose Earthquakes announced that they had acquired Löwen from St. Louis CITY SC.

The deal sent $425,000 in guaranteed General Allocation Money to St. Louis, with up to another $500,000 in conditional GAM tied to performance incentives. San Jose signed Löwen through the 2027–28 season and made him a Designated Player, subject to the league’s roster rules.

For the Earthquakes, it was a significant addition.

For my photographs, it changed the context completely.

The player I had photographed as an opponent had suddenly become part of the home team.

A Proven MLS Playmaker

Löwen arrived in San Jose with a substantial MLS résumé.

Through his St. Louis career, he recorded 20 goals and 27 assists in 84 regular-season appearances, making him the club’s all-time leader in regular-season assists and goal contributions.

His value isn’t limited to scoring.

The 6-foot-2 German midfielder brings playmaking, set-piece ability, physical presence and experience to the Earthquakes’ midfield. San Jose sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena described him as a proven player with the versatility to make an impact in the midfield.

And the timing matters.

San Jose brought him in while pushing toward the MLS playoffs, with the club looking for additional quality and experience in the middle of the field.

The Photograph Becomes the Story

That’s one of the things I enjoy most about sports photography.

You don’t always know what you’re documenting when you press the shutter.

A player walking onto the field can become a milestone.

A handshake can become the beginning of a rivalry.

A jersey can become a piece of history.

And sometimes, a photograph of an opposing player becomes a photograph of your future player.

Looking back at these images now, knowing what happened only days later, the scene feels different.

Löwen isn’t simply a St. Louis midfielder anymore.

He’s part of the next chapter in San Jose.

From St. Louis to San Jose

Löwen’s departure marked the end of an important chapter for St. Louis CITY SC.

He was there from the beginning and played a central role in the club’s inaugural MLS season. St. Louis sporting director Corey Wray called the decision difficult and credited Löwen for his contributions both on and off the field.

For San Jose, however, his arrival represents an opportunity to add an experienced MLS playmaker to a team with ambitions of making a playoff push.

And for a photographer standing on the sideline a few days before the announcement, it created something even more unexpected:

A set of photographs that suddenly became part of the player’s San Jose story.

I thought I was photographing Eduard Löwen, St. Louis CITY SC midfielder.

Turns out, I was photographing Eduard Löwen before he became a San Jose Earthquake.

Sometimes you don’t know you’re witnessing a transition until after it happens.

That’s sports.

That’s photography.

And that’s why we keep shooting.

CARSON — Rivalry nights rarely need an introduction.

At Dignity Health Sports Park, the California Clásico returned for its 106th edition, bringing the San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy together once again in one of Major League Soccer’s oldest rivalries.

For 78 minutes, neither side could break through.

Then came one moment.

A game San Jose nearly took

San Jose entered the match looking dangerous from the opening whistle.

Luka Jovanović, making his first start, nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute after drawing Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski off his line before finding Paul Marie, whose effort was cleared off the line.

Five minutes later, Jovanović created another opportunity for himself, only for Marcinkowski to deny him.

The chances kept coming.

Jack Jasinski tested the Galaxy goalkeeper in the 12th minute, while San Jose continued to control possession and create opportunities throughout the night.

By the numbers, the Quakes were the more aggressive side: 21 shots to LA’s 10 and 59.2% possession.

But soccer doesn’t reward possession.

It rewards finishing.

The turning point

Just before halftime, San Jose was reduced to ten men when Lucas Sanabria received a second yellow card and was sent off.

Suddenly, the challenge became even greater.

The Quakes had to defend a man down while still trying to find a way to win a rivalry match on the road.

For much of the second half, they did exactly that.

The Galaxy struggled to turn their numerical advantage into a breakthrough.

Then, in the 79th minute, the decisive sequence arrived.

Marco Reus found Harbor Miller on the right. Miller drove into the box and sent a low ball across the face of goal.

Joseph Paintsil was waiting.

One touch.

One finish.

1–0.

The fine margins of a rivalry

For San Jose, the result was particularly frustrating because the performance deserved more.

The Earthquakes created the better attacking numbers and forced Marcinkowski into five saves.

But the Galaxy found the one moment that mattered.

And once they had the lead, they protected it.

For the home side, the victory continued a recent run of success against San Jose, while Paintsil scored his fifth regular-season goal of the season.

For the Earthquakes, it was a reminder of how unforgiving the California Clásico can be.

One moment separates them

A rivalry doesn’t always need a spectacular 90 minutes.

Sometimes it comes down to a single clearance.

A goalkeeper’s save.

A red card.

Or one perfectly timed run into the box.

On this night in Carson, it was Paintsil’s finish that separated the two sides.

San Jose left Dignity Health Sports Park without a goal despite controlling much of the match.

The Galaxy left with three points.

And once again, the California Clásico was decided by the smallest of margins.

San Jose, California — A new chapter began in San Jose as Luka Jovanović stepped onto the field for his MLS debut with the San Jose Earthquakes.

The young forward’s first appearance in Major League Soccer marked an important moment in his transition to the league and gave Quakes supporters their first opportunity to see him compete in an MLS match.

From the opening moments, the debut carried the anticipation that comes with watching a new player begin his journey at the professional level.

A First Look

Jovanović’s debut was about more than a first appearance on an MLS scoresheet. It was the beginning of a new chapter — one that will be measured over the weeks and months ahead.

From the sidelines, the atmosphere surrounding the match captured the energy of an MLS night in San Jose: the supporters, the competition, and the intensity of a league where every moment matters.

Simon Becher scores twice as St. Louis defeats San Jose Earthquakes 3–1 in front of the PayPal Park crowd

SAN JOSE, Calif. — August 15, 2026

Under the lights at PayPal Park, the San Jose Earthquakes welcomed St. Louis CITY SC for a night of MLS football filled with energy, intensity, and a fast-moving battle from the opening whistle.

More than 15,000 supporters packed the stadium as San Jose looked to make the most of home-field advantage. The atmosphere around PayPal Park built throughout the evening, with supporters creating the familiar backdrop of chants, flags, drums, and anticipation before kickoff.

But it was St. Louis that controlled the early stages of the match.

St. Louis Strikes Early

The visitors wasted little time establishing themselves.

In the eighth minute, Daniel Edelman opened the scoring for St. Louis, putting CITY SC in front and immediately forcing San Jose to chase the game.

The Earthquakes attempted to respond, but St. Louis continued to find space and create dangerous opportunities in the attacking third.

The pressure eventually produced a second goal.

In the 27th minute, Simon Becher rose to meet a corner kick and headed the ball into the net, giving St. Louis a 2–0 advantage.

San Jose faced a difficult task heading into halftime. The Earthquakes had moments of possession and attacking pressure, but St. Louis’ ability to capitalize on its opportunities gave the visitors a comfortable advantage.

Earthquakes Answer After the Break

The second half began with an immediate change in momentum.

Just two minutes after the restart, San Jose found the breakthrough it needed.

Beau Leroux stepped up from outside the box and delivered a shot that found the back of the net, cutting St. Louis’ lead in half and bringing the Earthquakes back into the contest.

At 2–1, PayPal Park came alive again.

The goal gave the home side renewed energy, while the crowd responded with a surge of noise and encouragement. San Jose pushed forward looking for the equalizer, knowing that another goal could completely change the direction of the match.

For several minutes, the Earthquakes appeared to have the momentum.

But St. Louis responded quickly.

Becher Delivers Again

In the 55th minute, Simon Becher scored his second goal of the evening.

The St. Louis forward found the back of the net from inside the box, restoring the visitors’ two-goal advantage at 3–1.

For San Jose, it was a difficult blow coming only minutes after cutting the deficit.

The Earthquakes continued to push forward, searching for another opening, but St. Louis remained organized and managed the remainder of the match effectively.

As the minutes passed, the visitors protected their advantage and limited San Jose’s opportunities to get back into the game.

When the final whistle arrived, St. Louis CITY SC had secured a 3–1 victory.

A Night of Football at PayPal Park

The final score told the story of St. Louis’ efficiency, but the night offered much more than four goals.

From the pre-match buildup to the final whistle, PayPal Park provided the setting for another intense MLS evening in San Jose.

The supporters remained engaged throughout the match, especially during San Jose’s early second-half push. The stadium atmosphere changed noticeably after Leroux’s goal, demonstrating how quickly a single moment can shift the energy of a football match.

For photographers on the sideline, those moments are often as important as the goals themselves.

The reactions of the players after a missed opportunity. The concentration before a set piece. The celebration after a goal. The interaction between teammates. The supporters behind the goal. The coaching staff reacting to the action.

Together, those moments tell the story of a match beyond the final score.

St. Louis Continues Its Run

The victory was particularly significant for St. Louis CITY SC.

The 3–1 result extended the club’s unbeaten streak to 10 matches and marked its fourth consecutive victory at PayPal Park.

Simon Becher was the standout performer on the night, scoring twice and playing a decisive role in securing all three points for the visitors.

For San Jose, Beau Leroux’s second-half goal provided a moment of hope, but the Earthquakes ultimately could not overcome St. Louis’ response.

The Final Frame

MLS nights at PayPal Park are built around moments.

The lights coming on over the stadium. The supporters filling the stands. Players walking onto the field before kickoff. The intensity of the first challenge. The celebrations behind the goal. The disappointment after a missed chance. The final handshake after 90 minutes.

On this night, St. Louis CITY SC left San Jose with the result.

The Earthquakes will look to respond in their next opportunity at home, while St. Louis continues its impressive run.

MONTEREY, Calif. — There are corners you drive.

And then there are corners you attack.

At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the Corkscrew is one of the latter.

With its blind approach, dramatic elevation change and steep downhill drop, the legendary section of the circuit has become one of motorsport’s most recognizable challenges. During the hillclimb, André Musi brought something entirely different to it: an Audi, sideways and surrounded by smoke.

The Corkscrew, sideways

Musi approached the hillclimb section carrying speed before throwing the Audi into the corner, breaking traction and sending the car into a controlled slide.

The rear stepped out.

The tires began to work.

Smoke poured from the car as Musi held the drift through one of Laguna Seca’s most demanding sections.

It was less about simply getting through the corner and more about putting on a show.

And at the Corkscrew, the setting made the spectacle even bigger.

The famous sequence drops dramatically downhill after the crest, with the circuit’s Turns 8 and 8A creating one of the most distinctive pieces of asphalt in motorsport. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s full circuit measures 2.238 miles and features 11 turns.

Precision in the chaos

From the outside, drifting can look uncontrolled.

From behind the wheel, it is anything but.

Keeping an Audi balanced while deliberately breaking traction requires precise throttle control, steering corrections and timing. At Laguna Seca, those demands are amplified by the elevation change and the blind nature of the Corkscrew.

Musi’s run turned that technical challenge into a visual spectacle.

The Audi rotated toward the corner, the tires fought for grip, and the car emerged from the slide pointed toward the next section of track.

For the spectators lining the hill, it was one of those moments that makes motorsport more than just lap times.

A different way to conquer Laguna

The Corkscrew has hosted countless memorable racing moments over the decades.

But the hillclimb offers a different interpretation of the legendary section.

Instead of chasing another car or defending a position, drivers can attack the course on their own terms—using the elevation, speed and character of Laguna Seca to showcase what both driver and machine can do.

Musi’s Audi fit perfectly into that equation.

Smoke in the air.

Engine noise echoing across the hillside.

A car moving sideways through one of America’s most famous corners.

One corner. One Audi. One unforgettable run.

At Laguna Seca, the Corkscrew already provides the drama.

André Musi simply added another layer to it.

The Audi came into the corner fast, went sideways, and left behind a cloud of tire smoke—and a scene that looked more like a motorsport photograph than a conventional hillclimb run.

Some drivers conquer the Corkscrew by finding the perfect racing line.

Musi found his own line.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — June 25, 2026

There are concerts where the music is the whole story.

And then there are concerts where the setting becomes part of the performance.

On June 25, Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe came alive for the opening night of the 2026 Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series, bringing live music, local vendors, food, and a crowd together along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe. The free summer series is presented by the City of South Lake Tahoe and Visit Lake Tahoe.

Music on the Shoreline

With Lake Tahoe stretching behind the stage, Live at Lakeview offers something that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.

The audience isn’t sitting inside a traditional concert hall.

The lake is the backdrop. The mountains surround the scene. People gather on the shoreline, move between the vendors, meet friends, listen to the music, and take in the evening.

The series brings together locals and visitors every Thursday throughout the summer, with performances beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

On opening night, the lineup brought together Chuck Robertson & The Aloha Caddies and Red Dirt Ruckus, giving the crowd an energetic start to the summer series.

A Summer Tradition in Tahoe

Live at Lakeview is designed to be more than a concert.

The event brings together live music, local businesses, food vendors, art, and a beer and wine garden, creating a community gathering around the music. A free bike valet is also offered each week, with the service operated by local nonprofit organizations.

That community atmosphere is what makes the event especially interesting through a camera.

The performers are only one part of the frame.

The audience becomes part of it too.

A musician stepping into the light. Friends talking between songs. Someone dancing near the stage. A child watching the performers. The crowd reacting to a song.

Then, behind all of it, Lake Tahoe.

Photographing the Atmosphere

For me, the June 25 event was about capturing those connections.

Concert photography is often about the obvious moments — the singer at the microphone, the guitarist under the lights, the drummer caught in motion.

But an outdoor event like Live at Lakeview gives a photographer more to work with.

The environment matters.

The distance between the stage and the lake. The changing evening light. The crowd. The performers interacting with each other. The spontaneous moments happening between songs.

Those details help tell the story of what the event actually felt like to be there.

When the Lake Becomes Part of the Stage

That’s what makes Live at Lakeview different.

The music doesn’t compete with the landscape.

It becomes part of it.

As the evening develops, the energy of the crowd and the surrounding scenery create a visual rhythm of their own — music, movement, mountains and water all occupying the same frame.

It’s an event built around a simple idea: bring people together by the lake and give them a reason to stay for the evening.

On June 25, that idea came to life again.

The Summer Begins

The 2026 Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series continues through August 27, bringing different styles and performers to Lakeview Commons throughout the summer.

But opening night is always different.

It’s the first gathering.

The first songs.

The first crowd of the summer.

And for a photographer, the first opportunity to begin documenting the season.

On June 25, South Lake Tahoe didn’t need a concert hall.

It had a lake, a stage, a crowd — and a summer of music ahead.

SAN FRANCISCO — February 21, 2026

For one afternoon, Marina Boulevard stopped looking like a San Francisco waterfront road and started looking like a piece of the Formula 1 world.

Red Bull brought its high-performance motorsport spectacle to the city for the Red Bull Showrun San Francisco presented by Ford Racing, putting Formula 1 machinery, racing vehicles and thousands of fans against the backdrop of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. At the center of it all was Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda, back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car and giving the crowd one of its biggest attractions of the day.

Tsunoda drove Red Bull’s legendary RB7, the car that carried Sebastian Vettel to the 2011 World Championship. For a driver who had entered 2026 without a full-time race seat, the San Francisco demonstration offered something different: a chance to put himself back in the cockpit, in front of a city that had temporarily been transformed into a motorsport stage.

Formula 1 Meets the Marina

The idea was simple but spectacular.

Take a Formula 1 car out of the circuit environment and put it on the streets of San Francisco.

Marina Boulevard became the stage, with the Bay providing the backdrop and the sound of a Formula 1 engine cutting through the waterfront. The event was free to the public and featured a wider collection of Ford Racing machinery and motorsport personalities alongside Tsunoda.

For fans accustomed to watching Formula 1 through television screens, the experience was dramatically different. The cars were no longer distant objects circulating around a permanent circuit. They were passing through the city itself, bringing the noise, speed and spectacle of motorsport directly to the streets.

And Tsunoda was the driver at the center of the show.

Yuki Tsunoda’s Return to the Cockpit

Tsunoda entered the event as Red Bull’s test and reserve driver after losing his full-time Formula 1 seat at the end of the 2025 season.

His career had already taken him from AlphaTauri — now Racing Bulls — to a promotion to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. By February 2026, his role had changed, but his connection to the Red Bull family remained.

San Francisco therefore represented more than just another promotional appearance.

It was a return to the cockpit.

And Tsunoda made the most of it.

Behind the wheel of the RB7, the Japanese driver attacked Marina Boulevard with the enthusiasm that has become part of his identity, performing high-speed demonstrations and donuts for the crowd. The historic Red Bull machine, already famous from one of the team’s championship-winning eras, suddenly had a very different backdrop: San Francisco.

When the Show Took a Dramatic Turn

The spectacle eventually became more dramatic than planned.

During a donut demonstration, the RB7 suffered a fire at the rear of the car. Tsunoda reacted quickly and exited safely while marshals dealt with the flames.

It was an unexpected moment in an event built around controlled chaos — but it also illustrated why a Formula 1 car remains such a powerful visual and sensory experience.

Fire, smoke, noise and speed suddenly filled the waterfront.

For photographers, it was the kind of moment that cannot be recreated.

More Than Formula 1

Tsunoda wasn’t the only driver bringing horsepower to the Marina.

The event also featured former Formula 1 and rallycross driver Scott Speed, who drove a Racing Bulls machine, along with Ford off-road racer Mitch Guthrie Jr. and freestyle motocross rider Aaron Colton. Ford’s involvement brought additional performance machines into the demonstration, expanding the event beyond Formula 1 alone.

But the Formula 1 car remained the centerpiece.

There is something particularly striking about seeing a machine designed for world championship competition placed against an environment as recognizable as San Francisco.

The Marina has its cyclists, runners, sailboats and weekend crowds.

On this day, it had Formula 1.

A Different Kind of Motorsport Stage

San Francisco is no stranger to major sporting events, but motorsport has a unique ability to change the character of a city.

A permanent circuit has its own visual language: grandstands, pit lanes, runoff areas and paddocks.

The Marina has none of that.

Instead, there was the Bay, the city skyline, spectators pressed along the route and an F1 car moving through an environment that normally belongs to everyday San Francisco life.

That contrast became part of the story.

The RB7 wasn’t simply another racing car on another track.

It was Formula 1 temporarily inserted into the fabric of the city.

And Yuki Tsunoda was the person driving it.

The Image That Remains

For The Production Nomad, the Red Bull Showrun was ultimately about more than speed.

It was about the collision of motorsport and place — a championship-winning Formula 1 car, a Japanese driver, a Red Bull spectacle and one of America’s most recognizable waterfronts occupying the same frame.

Tsunoda’s presence gave the event its human element.

The RB7 supplied the history.

San Francisco supplied the setting.

Together, they created a motorsport spectacle that looked unlike a traditional Grand Prix weekend — and that was exactly the point.

For one afternoon, Marina Boulevard belonged to Formula 1.

And Yuki Tsunoda was back where he wanted to be: behind the wheel.
