Gray skies, a procession of military vessels, and an air show that never quite unfolded as planned. On the opening Friday of San Francisco Fleet Week, the Bay delivered a reminder that even the most anticipated spectacles remain at the mercy of the elements.

San Francisco Fleet Week returned to the Bay on Friday with the familiar anticipation of military aircraft, powerful naval vessels, and thousands of spectators gathering along the waterfront. But this year’s opening day came with a significant complication: the weather had other plans.

Low clouds, fog, and poor visibility settled over the Bay Area, creating a gray backdrop for one of San Francisco’s most recognizable annual events. What was expected to be a full afternoon of aerial demonstrations became a different kind of experience — one defined by changing conditions, interrupted performances, and the patience required to photograph an event that refused to follow its intended schedule.

For photographers and aviation enthusiasts, Fleet Week is about more than watching aircraft cross the sky. It is an opportunity to capture military aviation against the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island, and the distinctive landscape of the Bay. On Friday, however, the atmosphere itself became part of the story.

The Bay Before the Show

The day’s activities began with the Parade of Ships, bringing an impressive lineup of U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and allied naval vessels through San Francisco Bay.

Moving along the waterfront, the ships offered a different kind of spectacle from the high-speed demonstrations normally associated with Fleet Week. Their scale, movement, and presence against the city provided compelling photographic opportunities, even beneath the overcast skies.

Among the vessels participating were the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George, the amphibious transport dock USS Somerset, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, Coast Guard cutters USCGC Bertholf and USCGC Munro, and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Regina.

The San Francisco Fire Department’s fireboat added another visual highlight, sending powerful streams of water into the air as the vessels made their way through the Bay.

For those watching from the waterfront, the parade offered a reminder that Fleet Week is not solely an aviation event. It is also a showcase of the ships, crews, and maritime operations that form an essential part of the annual celebration.

Against the muted tones of the city and the water, the vessels stood out as the main characters of the morning.

When the Weather Changed Everything

The atmosphere surrounding the air show was noticeably different from the conditions spectators had hoped for.

Fog and low cloud cover limited visibility across the Bay, obscuring parts of the surrounding landscape and creating uncertainty about how much of the scheduled flying program would be possible. The weather became the defining factor of the afternoon, affecting both the audience’s experience and the ability of performers to complete their demonstrations.

For aviation photographers, these conditions present a familiar challenge. The ideal image often depends on the relationship between an aircraft and its surroundings — a jet framed against the Golden Gate Bridge, a formation passing over the skyline, or a dramatic maneuver with the Bay stretching into the distance.

When the sky closes in, those opportunities become harder to find.

Yet overcast conditions can also change the character of a photograph. The softer light, muted colors, and atmospheric haze create a different visual language, one that can feel more documentary than spectacular.

Friday’s Fleet Week was a reminder that photographing aviation requires more than technical preparation. It also requires adapting to conditions that cannot be controlled.

The Blue Angels and a Performance Cut Short

The biggest disappointment of the afternoon came with the highly anticipated appearance of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

The team is the centerpiece of Fleet Week’s air show, drawing spectators from across the Bay Area and beyond. Their tightly coordinated formations, precision flying, and signature maneuvers are among the event’s defining attractions.

But the weather prevented Friday’s performance from unfolding as planned.

After a delay caused by poor visibility, the Blue Angels began flying at approximately 3:50 p.m. The team performed initial low-altitude formations before breaking away to assess the conditions. Additional flyovers followed, but the full demonstration — including the higher-altitude maneuvers audiences had come to see — did not take place.

The performance was curtailed shortly before 4:15 p.m., leaving spectators with only a partial version of the expected show.

Some civilian demonstrations were also canceled because of the adverse conditions.

It was a frustrating outcome for those who had spent the day finding vantage points, preparing equipment, and waiting for the aircraft to appear. For photographers in particular, the challenge was not simply that the show was shortened. The entire rhythm of the afternoon had changed.

There would be no guarantee of the planned formations, no certainty about which aircraft might appear next, and no assurance that the conditions would improve enough to deliver the images everyone had envisioned.

Safety, ultimately, had to take priority over the spectacle.

Photographing Fleet Week Beyond the Perfect Conditions

For me, Fleet Week is as much about the process of being out there with a camera as it is about coming home with a particular image.

The photographs from Friday included the Blue Angels, Coast Guard aircraft, and naval vessels, with the city and the Bay providing the backdrop. Some frames brought San Francisco into the composition, while others incorporated the Bay Bridge, giving the images a sense of place beyond the aircraft themselves.

Working in changing weather means adjusting expectations. The light is different, the background can disappear into the clouds, and the opportunities to capture a clean frame may be limited. Patience becomes just as important as camera settings.

There is also something compelling about documenting an event that does not go according to plan. The resulting images capture not only the spectacle but also the conditions in which it took place.

A Fleet Week photograph does not always need to show a jet performing a dramatic maneuver against a clear blue sky. Sometimes, a vessel moving through a gray Bay or an aircraft emerging through the haze can communicate the atmosphere of the day just as effectively.

The objective is to document what actually happened, not simply what was expected to happen.

A Disappointing Show, but Not a Lost Day

Friday may not have delivered the full aerial spectacle that many spectators anticipated, but it was far from a wasted day.

The Parade of Ships provided a substantial photographic opportunity, and the aircraft that did appear offered glimpses of the aviation program despite the difficult conditions. The atmosphere itself became part of the experience, shaping the way the event looked and how it could be documented.

Fleet Week is a reminder that outdoor events are never entirely predictable. Weather forecasts can change, cloud ceilings can remain lower than expected, and performances can be delayed, modified, or canceled when conditions are unsuitable.

For the people behind the cameras, the responsibility is to adapt and keep documenting.

The opening day of Fleet Week San Francisco did not follow the script. The fog took control of the sky, the Blue Angels’ performance was cut short, and some of the day’s planned demonstrations never materialized.

But the ships still moved through the Bay. The aircraft still made their appearances. And the waterfront remained a stage for one of San Francisco’s most distinctive annual traditions.

The weekend’s remaining air shows offered another opportunity for the spectacle to return, weather permitting. For those heading back out with cameras, the mission remained the same: find the vantage point, watch the conditions, and be ready when the next moment arrives.

Ten years after the release of Coloring Book, Chance the Rapper returned to San Francisco and brought the landmark mixtape back to life at The Masonic.

The Chicago rapper took the stage Tuesday night for his Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour, turning the historic San Francisco venue into a celebration of a project that has remained deeply connected to his fans for a decade.

From the opening moments, the atmosphere inside The Masonic was electric. Chance opened with “All We Got,” emerging through a cloud of smoke before moving through a set filled with some of the most recognizable songs from Coloring Book.

“Blessings,” “Summer Friends,” “Angels,” “Mixtape,” “Smoke Break,” “Juke Jam,” and “Cocoa Butter Kisses” were among the tracks that brought the audience back to the era when Coloring Book first became a defining moment in Chance’s career.

The performance carried the same gospel-inspired energy that has always been central to the project. Chance repeatedly engaged with the crowd, turning the audience into another part of the performance through call-and-response moments and encouraging fans to sing and move along with the music.

Behind him, drummer Greg Landfair Jr. and keyboardist Peter CottonTail helped build the live arrangements, moving between hip-hop, gospel, soul, and more stripped-down musical moments.

But the night wasn’t only about looking back.

Chance also brought newer material into the performance, connecting the music of Coloring Book with where he is today. During “The Highs and the Lows,” he even worked a Bay Area reference into his freestyle, giving the San Francisco crowd a moment of its own.

The stage production added another layer to the anniversary celebration. Archival footage appeared on the screens during parts of the performance, visually connecting the Chance of a decade ago with the artist standing on stage in San Francisco in 2026.

The evening began with Louisiana rapper La Reezy, who opened the show with an energetic set. Moving across the stage with a combination of sharp lyricism, melodic delivery, and Southern hip-hop influence, La Reezy set the tone before Chance took over.

By the closing moments, the room had become a celebration of ten years of Coloring Book. Chance closed with “Same Drugs,” performing the emotional piano-driven track as archival footage played behind him.

Smoke and confetti filled The Masonic as the performance came to an end.

For fans who have carried Coloring Book with them for the past decade, the San Francisco stop was more than an anniversary concert. It was an opportunity to revisit the music, memories, and energy of a project that helped define an important chapter in Chance the Rapper’s career.

The streets of San Francisco’s Mission District came alive with the sound, style, and culture of lowriding as Kings of the Streets brought an incredible collection of custom lowriders to the neighborhood for a day celebrating community, craftsmanship, and tradition.

The event brought together generations of lowrider enthusiasts, families, and spectators who gathered along Mission Street to admire the cars and experience one of San Francisco’s most distinctive cultural traditions.

From classic Chevrolets and Impalas to highly customized builds, every vehicle had its own personality. Candy-colored paint, polished chrome, custom interiors, wire wheels, and hydraulic systems turned the streets into an outdoor showcase of automotive artistry.

But Kings of the Streets was about much more than the cars.

Lowriding has deep roots in Latino and Chicano communities throughout California, and the Mission District has long been an important part of that history. For many of the people participating, these cars represent family, identity, creativity, and a tradition passed from one generation to the next.

The event also featured a parade through the Mission, giving spectators the chance to see the cars moving through the neighborhood rather than simply displayed at a car show. Crowds lined the streets, phones and cameras in hand, as the lowriders made their way through the Mission.

One of the most exciting moments of the day was the hopping competition, where drivers put their hydraulic setups on display. Cars lifted their front ends high into the air as spectators gathered around to watch the competition and cheer on the participants.

The celebration also carried special significance as the San Francisco Lowrider Council marked 45 years of lowrider history and community organizing. What began decades ago has grown into a cultural institution that continues to bring people together through cars, art, music, and community.

Walking through the event, it was clear that lowriding remains a living culture. Older generations shared the tradition with younger enthusiasts, while new builders brought their own ideas and styles to the scene.

For the Mission District, Kings of the Streets was not simply a gathering of customized automobiles. It was a celebration of heritage and the people who continue to keep that heritage alive.

As the final cars rolled through the streets, the chrome reflected the San Francisco sunlight and the Mission once again became a stage for a culture that has been part of the city for generations.

For two days, Grant Avenue became a moving canvas of color, sound and tradition as San Francisco’s Chinatown welcomed the annual Autumn Moon Festival.

Held September 19–20, the 2026 celebration brought performances, food vendors, cultural demonstrations and thousands of visitors into the heart of Chinatown. Stretching along Grant Avenue between California Street and Broadway, the festival transformed the neighborhood into a lively street celebration centered around the traditions of the Mid-Autumn season.

From the opening parade Saturday morning, the streets were filled with movement. Lion dancers and martial artists made their way through the crowds, followed by cultural performances, music and dance on the main stage at Washington and Grant.

The festival also reflected the way traditions continue to evolve. Alongside Chinese folk dance and martial arts, this year’s program featured a K-pop dance contest, bringing a distinctly contemporary energy to a celebration rooted in centuries-old Mid-Autumn traditions.

For photographers, Chinatown offered no shortage of moments.

The expressions of performers waiting between appearances. The intensity of martial artists in motion. Children watching lion dancers pass through the crowd. Vendors serving food beneath the festival decorations. Families moving through Grant Avenue together.

And then there were the details—the colors, costumes, instruments, lanterns and faces that turned ordinary Chinatown streets into something completely different for the weekend.

Sunday brought another full day of programming, including Tai Chi, taiko drumming, guzheng music, dance performances and the traditional closing dragon parade. A dumpling contest added another layer of energy to the afternoon before the festival came to a close.

At its heart, the Autumn Moon Festival is about more than a weekend of entertainment. The Mid-Autumn tradition is associated with the harvest, the full moon, family reunion and togetherness, with mooncakes serving as one of its most recognizable traditions.

In San Francisco, those traditions continue to live in the streets of Chinatown—alongside the businesses, restaurants, residents and communities that give the neighborhood its identity.

Walking through the festival with a camera, it was impossible to capture everything.

But sometimes photography isn’t about capturing everything.

It’s about finding the moments that make you stop.

A dancer mid-performance.

A child looking up at a lion.

A performer preparing backstage.

A crowd reacting to the action in front of them.

A quiet moment between the noise.

These are the frames that tell the story.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — June 25, 2026

There are concerts where the music is the whole story.

And then there are concerts where the setting becomes part of the performance.

On June 25, Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe came alive for the opening night of the 2026 Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series, bringing live music, local vendors, food, and a crowd together along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe. The free summer series is presented by the City of South Lake Tahoe and Visit Lake Tahoe.

Music on the Shoreline

With Lake Tahoe stretching behind the stage, Live at Lakeview offers something that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.

The audience isn’t sitting inside a traditional concert hall.

The lake is the backdrop. The mountains surround the scene. People gather on the shoreline, move between the vendors, meet friends, listen to the music, and take in the evening.

The series brings together locals and visitors every Thursday throughout the summer, with performances beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

On opening night, the lineup brought together Chuck Robertson & The Aloha Caddies and Red Dirt Ruckus, giving the crowd an energetic start to the summer series.

A Summer Tradition in Tahoe

Live at Lakeview is designed to be more than a concert.

The event brings together live music, local businesses, food vendors, art, and a beer and wine garden, creating a community gathering around the music. A free bike valet is also offered each week, with the service operated by local nonprofit organizations.

That community atmosphere is what makes the event especially interesting through a camera.

The performers are only one part of the frame.

The audience becomes part of it too.

A musician stepping into the light. Friends talking between songs. Someone dancing near the stage. A child watching the performers. The crowd reacting to a song.

Then, behind all of it, Lake Tahoe.

Photographing the Atmosphere

For me, the June 25 event was about capturing those connections.

Concert photography is often about the obvious moments — the singer at the microphone, the guitarist under the lights, the drummer caught in motion.

But an outdoor event like Live at Lakeview gives a photographer more to work with.

The environment matters.

The distance between the stage and the lake. The changing evening light. The crowd. The performers interacting with each other. The spontaneous moments happening between songs.

Those details help tell the story of what the event actually felt like to be there.

When the Lake Becomes Part of the Stage

That’s what makes Live at Lakeview different.

The music doesn’t compete with the landscape.

It becomes part of it.

As the evening develops, the energy of the crowd and the surrounding scenery create a visual rhythm of their own — music, movement, mountains and water all occupying the same frame.

It’s an event built around a simple idea: bring people together by the lake and give them a reason to stay for the evening.

On June 25, that idea came to life again.

The Summer Begins

The 2026 Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series continues through August 27, bringing different styles and performers to Lakeview Commons throughout the summer.

But opening night is always different.

It’s the first gathering.

The first songs.

The first crowd of the summer.

And for a photographer, the first opportunity to begin documenting the season.

On June 25, South Lake Tahoe didn’t need a concert hall.

It had a lake, a stage, a crowd — and a summer of music ahead.
