SAN JOSE — Before the San Jose Earthquakes and St. Louis CITY SC kicked off at PayPal Park, the stadium had a familiar Bay Area voice calling for attention.
Only this time, it wasn’t coming from the pitch.
It was coming from the NBA.
Golden State Warriors guard De’Anthony Melton stepped into the spotlight before kickoff, taking his turn on the Earthquakes’ famous siren and sending the crowd into game-day mode.
For a moment, the basketball court and soccer pitch felt like the same Bay Area stage.
From Dub Nation to Quakes Nation
Melton’s appearance brought together two of the region’s professional sports worlds.
A member of the Golden State Warriors, Melton has become part of the Bay Area sports landscape. On this night, he traded the hardwood for the pitch and the Warriors’ blue and gold for the Earthquakes’ blue and black.
Then came the siren.
Melton grabbed the controls and sounded the horn as the crowd inside PayPal Park responded.
It was a simple moment, but one that captured something bigger: the connection between Bay Area teams and the fans who follow them across sports.
More than a guest appearance
Melton’s night didn’t stop with the siren.
He also exchanged jerseys with Earthquakes and U.S. men’s national team defender DeJuan Jones, creating another connection between the Bay Area’s basketball and soccer communities.
For a few minutes before the match, the focus wasn’t on standings, points or statistics.
It was about the energy of the stadium.
And Melton knew exactly how to bring it.

The match itself would eventually belong to St. Louis, who defeated San Jose 3–1 after taking control early.
But before the result was decided, Melton had already provided one of the night’s most recognizable images.
Standing inside PayPal Park with the siren in his hands, a Warriors star became part of the Quakes’ matchday ritual.
